If I had emojis on my phone I'd be like heart emoji, smiley face emoji with heart eyes and then the one that looks surprised with both hands on the head and the mouth that says OOO.

One day, when the ice caps melt and the moon turns blood red, you'll want to commit. Unicorns and lammassus will dance at your wedding.

I'LL LET THAT LAST ONE TAKE US OUT.

ET has great aesthetic taste.  Enough Byzantine altarpieces to last for several galaxies.

HOUSTON, WE HAVE PROGRESS

Update! Update!

We have leaves changing, we have leaves falling, we have AUTUMN UP IN THE EAST COAST.

You know those PERFECT four days right as the summer transitions to fall?  The days where you don't quite need a jacket and the grass is still soft and green, but the trees are peppered with bits of red and orange and gold?  And you know how those perfect four days never last longer than four days?  Out here it's lasted the entire month of October.

As keen as I am on this - and believe me, I AM KEEN - I've craved the crunching leaves.  I'm ready to break out my leather jackets.  And the time, my friends, has finally come.

Definitive proof to follow:

You're not forgotten, scarf balls.

 photo IMG_4123.jpg

So here's the thing about October in the District.
It feels a little bit like cheating.

Early in the month I unwadded my scarves, fretting about the certain frost soon to come.  But then pleasant day followed pleasant day, and I continue to wear gray v-necks unshrouded in any additional layers.  My scarves have become re-wadded in that space between my bed and the wall and all in all I feel like October deserves a medal.

During my visit to Utah mid-September, leaves were already starting to change. Out here we're mid-October and the green is holding steady.

+ I can't believe it's taken me so long to eat at one of José Andres's restaurants. Who am I kidding. Of course I can believe it. Because 2 ounces of food will cost you an elbow and a knee.  BUT.  JALEO??!  WORTH IT.  I am sold on tapas.

Keep on keepin on, October baby!

conference weekend

 photo IMG_3405.jpg

Last weekend was my religion's semi-annual General Conference.  We receive revelation, direction, and counsel from our leaders. Most of the time that means dedicating my Saturday + Sunday to sitting in front of my laptop, taking notes in my pjs, surrounded by roommates or family and indulging in excessive gluttony.

This conference included all of that, but one of the sessions we drove out to Great Falls Park and listened to it river side.  Being in nature and listening to the inspired words upped the spiritual ante, and it's something I'd love to make a Conference tradition.

Mom and Fog: A Cabin Weekend

Over the weekend Mom and I headed down to Kanarra mountain, just the two of us.

The cabin was such a wonderful place to be a child -- fishing in the lake, building a house from rocks and sticks, four wheeling over damp red dirt.  S'mores and songs at night, my grandmother's warbling voice reaching across the fire pit as she rocked a grandchild on her lap.

My mom and I are exceptionally close, I'd say.  If I could choose a person to be just like, it would be her.  But I'll save that sappiness for another time, as it will suffice to tell you she's my best friend.

Having two of my very favorites together - mountain and mom - was really, really special for me.

We watched a couple Meg Ryan movies, legs wrapped in blankets knitted by relatives, one of my grandpa's old sweatshirts under my head.  We talked about what we've done with our lives and what I'm doing with mine next.  We giggled and talked and listened and drank hot chocolate heated in a red-speckled kettle.

The next morning when we woke up, the entire mountain was shrouded in a dense, wet fog.  It danced in and out for most of the morning and reminded me entirely of the moors of England. Real Wuthering Heights quality fog.  I hope I always remember getting up that morning, feet cold despite my thick socks, and treading into the kitchen to see my mom out on the porch.  Her back was to me, and she was leaning against the railing, head tilted back, exposing her neck to the heavy gray fog waiting in the gully beyond her.

When it had cleared enough we hiked up to the lookout over Zion's.  It's still early in the season, so there were only spotted yellow patches, but the mountain in the heat of fall is a lovely buttery yellow thanks to all the aspens. Gosh, this place fills my heart.

Perfect; now you're primed for the gratuitous and excessive pictures of the two of us/foliage shots!! All the most important parts of a story.
